Garmin portable GPS units have been used in Beechcraft aircraft for years but many owners have never been happy with any of the GPS mounts tried. They have either been too big & clunky, or didn’t fit properly, or inhibited operation of the throw over yoke or obstructed the view of some instruments. Not one of them seemed to be designed to allow for proper operation of the Beechcraft single, ‘throw-over’ yoke. Being Beecraft owners ourselves (and rather particular about what goes into them), we finally decided to design a GPS mount specifically for our Bonanzas, Debonairs, Barons & Travel Airs. A partial list of the design criteria we used includes the following; • Durable - The darn thing shouldn’t break • Solid - Turbulence is not the time to fiddle with positioning or slipping clamps • Low Profile – You shouldn’t have to ‘work around’ the GPS mount to reach the gear or flaps, nor should it obstruct the view of the instruments (or anything else) • High-Quality - It should look like it belongs in a Beechcraft • Safe – Should the ‘throw-over’ feature of the single yoke ever need to be used, the distraction of untangling a portable GPS or losing functionality is not an option • Adaptable - Must work with all currently available as well as anticipated future Garmin aviation GPS units • Adjustable - Must be capable of positioning the GPS for optimum viewing angle The new Garmin GPS mount achieves all of these criteria and is easy to install, as well. It accommodates the Garmin GPSMAP 496, 395. 296, 295, 196, 96C, 96 and any other system utilizing Garmin’s generic Dashboard Mount (p/n 010-10199-02) as supplied with all their aviation units. The machined aluminum mount is very low profile, solid and flips up for operation of the throw-over yoke. Having now used it, personally for more than 12,000 miles, it has lived up to our every expectation and impressed everyone who has seen it, as well.
